John W. Merting has more than 40 years of experience in admiralty and maritime law. John Merting has been Board Certified in Admiralty and Maritime Law for many years, and was the first lawyer to gain this certification in the entire Florida Panhandle.

Mr. Merting, through his more than 40 years of professional experience and his active memberships in numerous professional organizations, has developed an extensive network of attorneys at prominent firms nationwide and overseas who are available as co-counsel to assist in the prosecution of claims. Mr. Merting headed the annual maritime seminar hosted by the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute, and is only the second plaintiffs’ lawyer in its 40-year history to be elected Chairman of this organization of some 700 maritime lawyers. He was invited to join the Academy of Trial Advocacy (formerly known as the Academy of Catastrophic Injury Attorneys), an organization of less than 300 lawyers in the entire United States, and only 9 members in Florida. Mr. Merting has published and presented papers at the American Association of Justice Annual Convention in Toronto, Canada, the Tulane Admiralty Law Insititute, and on numerous occasions to the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute.

Mr. Merting is experienced in assisting lawyers with Special Needs Trusts and Medicare Set-Asides. Among Mr. Merting’s many speaking engagements and published works are explanations of the importance of Special Needs Trusts, Medicare Set-Asides, plain settlement trusts, etc. He has assisted dozens of attorneys in establishing these planning tools, without which clients can lose government benefits after receiving a settlement.
