Florida mother organizes artificial reef in memory of her son

A South Florida mother is remembering the life of her son by creating an artificial reef that will provide shelter for sea wildlife. The woman's son died in a boating accident approximately three years ago, and the reef is a way for the mother to keep the memory of her son alive.

The 17-year-old boy was fishing with friends in 2015 when the boat they were using struck a low-lying bridge in Fort Lauderdale. The accident resulted in the boy suffering catastrophic neck and head injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

In his memory, the boy's mother has organized the creation of what may be Broward County's biggest artificial reef. Concrete is being used to make the artificial reef, which will be deposited 70 feet below the water.

The mother said that she was "ecstatic" to create the structure for the benefit of sea life and to honor the memory of her son. She helped raise the $100,000 in funds for the project through the John Michael Baker Foundation and Coastal Conservation Association chapter in Broward County. There will be two reefs -- one for the young man's memorial and the other will be a fishing reef.

In the wake of a fatal boating accident, family members of those who died may want to investigate the circumstances of the accident. In some cases, surviving family members can pursue financial claims through a wrongful death action. They may be able to obtain financial damages by proving that a negligent or wrongfully-acting party was responsible for their loved one's death.
